About
South Pennine Archives comprises the digital image archive of Pennine Heritage and the document archive of the Hebden Bridge Local History Society. The archives are housed in the Birchcliffe Centre in Hebden Bridge, a Grade II listed former Baptist Chapel. Both archives focus on the Upper Calder Valley in the Calderdale metropolitan district but the image archive also includes images from across the South Pennines and beyond.
The oldest images date from the mid-nineteenth century, although the majority are photographs from the twentieth century. They cover a range of topics including everyday life, railways and canals, and vernacular architecture amongst many others. The image archive also contains other collections that are yet to made available on this website. A list of these is available on the Other Collections page
The document archive contains materials pertaining to the local area ranging from the 1600s to the present day. Many of these are unique documents that complement the holdings of West Yorkshire Archive Service. The archive also actively collects the document archives of local societies and groups to capture the heritage of tomorrow. The main collections available on this website comprise
- circa 11,500 important local habitat and species records collected by naturalists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
- the accounts, estate papers and diaries of the yeoman clothier Sutcliffe family of Stonesheygate in Heptonstall. These collections cover the late eighteenth and much of the nineteenth centuries and provide detail on farming, cloth making and estate management operations of the period.
Both archives are accredited by West Yorkshire Archive Service and are used not only by inhabitants of the area but also by national and international visitors interested in the family, social and cultural history of the area.
