Birch View, Birchcliffe road, Hebden Bridge, 1940-45

Photo donated by David Scholes who provides this information: My residence at Birch View, Birchcliffe Road was from 1940, when my father was appointed as Manager at the Hebden Bridge branch of Martins’ Bank, until 1945, when he was moved to another branch in the Manchester area. It being wartime, he served , I think as a Sergeant in the local home guard; Our new house was of course ideal for me as a child – with four staircases, four mostly unused attic rooms, and the oddity of a second storey window in, of all places, the cellar, it was ideal for hide and seek, and in better weather ideally placed for trips to Hardcastle Crags, then largely unknown to the wider world, or up onto the moors.
