Boiler in Transit

July 1939 A 45 ton marine boiler destined for Holme End Dye Works, Hawksclough. The boler came from Heysham to Birkenhead by sea and was then transfered to an articulated lorry driven by Albert Wilson of Frechehill, Sheffield. There were various problems on the way but a major one occurred when it arrived at Mytholmroyd on Saturday 29th July, owing to the narrowness of Holme End Bridge. It was necessary to jack the boiler up to a height of 3ft 4ins above the vehicle to get it clear of walls. It was also necessary to strengthen the archway under the bridge and remove the iron railings from each side.
