Coronation Arch, Hebden Bridge

The following text is taken from Looking Back at Hebden Bridge by Frank Horsfall & Terry Wyke: The centrepiece of Hebden Bridge’s decorations was a triumphal arch designed by the District Surveyor, T. Waddington. Christened Hebden Bridge’s ˜Marble Arch’, it spanned the junction at Bridge Gate and New Road. One side was decorated and lit by electricity courtesy of the local council whilst the other side, seen here, was illuminated by gas supplied by the Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd Gas Board. Following a day of church services, processions and festivities, the arch’s lights were switched on before a large and enthusiastic crowd. The Arch proved so popular that the Council decided to leave it standing for the rest of the summer.
