Ewood Court, Mytholmroyd

The sketch and description are from The Calderdale Sketch Book by JL Berbiers, published in 1973 by The Halifax Courier Ltd. Ewood’s historical links with Mytholmroyd stretch back for centuries. The Farrers lived at the Hall from 1471 to the early part of the 17th century when it came into the possession of the Lockwoods. Dr John Fawcett, the founder of the Hope Baptist Church, Hebden Bridge, lived there in the late 1799s and early 1800s and with his sons established an academy there. Thomas Riley bought Ewood Hall in 1850 but the family had been living there for some years and in 1869 he bought Little Ewood which later became known as Ewood Court. It was during their journeys about the country that John Wesley and his brother Charles stayed at Little Ewood. Ewood Court had already been sold when in 1863 the 153 acre estate – then one of the largest in a single piece in the upper Calder Valley – was sold with, inevitably, land going for modern development.
