Fallingroyd Bridge, near Hebden Bridge

c1930. The tram tracks can be clearly seen in the photograph of Fallingroyd Bridge which takes the road over the Rochdale Canal. This bridge was an accident blackspot and was demolished to be replaced by a culverted section of the canal, which allowed some of the bends in the road to be taken out. Later when the Rochdale Canal was being restored the culvert was replaced by a tunnel to allow canal traffic to flow again. The lady standing on the bridge is believed to be Alice Longstaff, and to her left is the saw mill that became known as Walkley’s Clog Mill which was destroyed by fire in 2019.
