Floods at Mytholmroyd

East Parade, Mytholmroyd. The man on the right is Wilfred Dempsey. The River Calder was not the cause of this flood. A very heavy storm had taken place and a vast amount of water swept off the moors so rapidly that the drains could not cope, also a blocked culvert above Midgley Road did not help the situation. The water flooded the houses of Eat and West Parade to a depth of 2ft before continuing downhill affecting other properties on the way and finally waterlogging the centre of Mytholmroyd.. fortunately not many of the above houses were occupied at the time and were demolished shortly afterwards and replaced with flats now known as Orchard Walk.Information courtesy of “It’s Water Under the Bridge” by Molly Sunderland.
