Foster Mill letter head

These two early drawings show Foster Mill in the early part of the 19th century.The left picture shows what became known as Hebden Estate mill, and was connected by a gantry to a newer building which housed the sewing shop. Redman Brothers Clothing Manufacturers made men’s clothing, trousers, boys short trousers (knickers, as the workforce called them) and during WW11 made clothing for the armed forces, most notably duffel coats for the navy. They also continued to make British Rail jackets and overcoats into the 1970s. The base of the chimney can still be seen at the end of Foster Lane today although the large mill was demolished in the 1980s. New housing now occupies the site. The right hand site image shows on the left the row of cottages known as spring Grove. The new houses bear the same name. To the right of the chimney a steep road can be seen leading up to Keighley Road. Sadly, no ground for grazing remains today.
