Hazlewood Castle , Porch to Chapel

Slide 8 – There is a South porch which is old, and over the entrance a statue of Saint Leonard. One of the chief historic attractions of Hazlewood Castle and one that will sanctify it for the whole of its existence is the fact that from its towers and battlement, its inmates looked down upon the “bloodiest field “ of the Wars of the Roses. The tradition is that on that sad Palm Sunday 29th of March 1461, the shouts of the combatants and the clash of arms at the battle raging at Towton Field were distinctly heard in this chapel while the congregation were at Mass.
