Hebden Bridge general view

A wonderful view possibly taken from Heptonstall road, c1890. The Birchcliife Chapel hasn’t been roofed nor the houses on Eiffel Street, and Chapel Avenue/ Edward Street is not even started. Note the gasholder on Victoria Road, situated in an area of town where there were numerous mills and houses, so gas consumption would be high. In the centre is Nutclough Mill clearly showing the original buiulding with its soot stained stone and the various extensions, to either side and above. Nutclough Mill was built in the 1700s and was purchased in 1873 by the Hebden Bridge Fustian Manufacturing Society, a worker’s cooperative where each worker had an ownership stake in the business and the building (Nutclough Mill was actually the first worker’s co-operative textile manufacturing mill in the world.
