Hebden Bridge General View from the North

View from above Foster Lane across the town to Fairfield. In the foreground Hangingroyd Mill and to the right gable ends of houses in the Hangingroyd area. Extreme left the roof of the Board School on the Stubbings hillside and below right the Co-op Building. Part way up the far hillside the white Pallis House and houses on Palace House Road with a goods train on the line below. Date unknown but prior to extension of the Co-op Bulding in 1889. This panorama of Hebden Bridge looks towards the Erringden hillside and reveals the considerable development which had occurred in the Hangingroyd district even before building of St George’s Bridge. Foster Holme is the open land in the foreground. Across the river stands the large textile works of R.B. Brown, built on the site of the manorial corn mill for Heptonstall. On the right-hanbd side, the newly terraced housing around Sackville Street and Linden place can be identified. Whilst that side of Hangingroyd Lane is clearly built-up, the other side remains empty. This large area was known as Jack Taylor’s Garden and it was to remain almost free of buildings until the start of the century.
