High Bentley, Shelf

The sketch and description were originally published in The Halifax Courier in 1912-1913. The history of the Shelf Bentleys has been traced back to the 13th century. This homestead has on its doorway the date and lettering ‘RWL, 1661’, the initials of Richard and his wife and the date of erection, and the stone is understood to encase a timbered structure. In spite of its somewhat dilapidated appearance it has some striking features, the chief being that portion in the centre with the low gable. There are strong evidences that this section was originally intended to be used as a chapel. The sketch gives a back view of the building, now divided into two cottages and a farm house. In the ‘little chapel’ is an interesting fireplace over which is a large coat of arms. PH/28.
