Description
Date unknown but after the turnpike through the town was completed 1770s. The road coming up the centre, now Commercial Street, was the Halifax- Hebden Bridge section of the Halifax – Todmorden Turnpike and ran to the front of the White Lion passing the White Horse Inn on the left. By the yard of the White Lion was a toll bar, just visible as a here as a line across the road, from which the turnpike road continued along Bridge Gate and over New Bridge at West End and on to Todmorden.
