New Road, Mytholmroyd

The sketch and description are from The Calderdale Sketch Book by JL Berbiers, published in 1973 by The Halifax Courier Ltd. There is no better example of Mytholmroyd’s twisting and turning main roads than the section of the B6138 from its junction with the Calder Valley trunk road to Clegg Nook. Here the road winds between buildings before striking out towards Cragg Vale and the moors beyond. Like it does at both Todmorden and Sowerby Bridge, the railway strides over the centre of the village on its bending way across the Pennines between Manchester and Leeds. Houses cluster alongside, the architectural congestion being matched only by vehicular congestion, but little can be done to alleviate such problems without ripping out the throbbing heart of the village.
