Relief Road, Halifax

The sketch and description are from The Calderdale Sketch Book by JL Berbiers, published in 1973 by The Halifax Courier Ltd. Seen from New Bank are the two approach lanes (inward and outward) of Halifax’s inner relief road. The railings of a portion of Charlestown Road can be seen on the left, but North Bridge itself, now dwarfed by the modern structures, is just out of range. Standing high in the left background are the Albion Court and St James’s Court flats, in the centre are the unmistakable Dean Clough Mills, while on the right is the Haley Court block of the Haley Hill flats which appears to surmount the new high retaining wall on the north side of New Bank.
