Title
Sundial House, Clifton
Identifier

Description
The sketch and description are from The Calderdale Sketch Book by JL Berbiers, published in 1973 by The Halifax Courier Ltd. Set in one of the walls of the cottage 115 Towngate, Clifton is a sundial which bears the date 1783 and the inscription ‘I have the time’. There is a belief that many years ago it may have been on the wall of a building near the Armytage Arms, afterwards demolished, but this is not known with certainty. The ‘gate’ part of Towngate which runs from Clifton Common into the village is an old usage for road, way or entry – hence the way to the ‘town’ of Clifton. PH/25.
