Description
John Tillotson (1630-1694) was successively Chaplain to Charles II, Dean of Canterbury in 1672, Dean of St Paul’s in 1689 and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1691. Born in Sowerby, and educated at Cambridge, he was a leading advocate for moderation and toleration, opposing Catholicism and holding sympathetic views towards non-conformist Protestants.
